Calgary Stampede and Fair, Alberta, photos by Richard Middleton. www.geatriver.com : While the Cowboy Chuckwagon Race is the highlight of the Annual Calgary Stampede, it is surely not the only show in town. The Round Up barns house the largest state fair we've ever seen, rodeo events, and a $10 million dollar grand-stand show. Oh yes, and free pancake and sausage breakfasts all over town!

Rich and Pat Middleton, Travelers at Work : Travel journalism is tough work, but someone has to do it! I love these pix because they show Rich and I doing what we do best. First of all, travel journalism means a lifestyle committed to, and shaped around, the ability to TRAVEL. We made the decision while we were both in our early 20s to plan a lifestyle that offered freedom to travel. So we've both been self-employed in careers that require intense burst of application, but never an "hourly" committment. By chance, we turned out to be perfectly matched as a travel team. I knew I was a writer at heart. I knew he was a naturalist at heart. I wouldn't know he was a photographer until two years later when we moved to Australia. I did know I had a traveling partner when Rich flew to London (where I was spending a semester abroad) to marry me. I've learned that we each contribute something unique to the partnership... I "shoot" to record data, or a moment that I will labor over at a later date. I would die of boredom waiting for the perfect moment to catch a hummingbird, or Mt. McKinley to appear momentarily in a fog. Rich, is uniquely attracted to that "perfect moment." Pursuing the "back story," satisfying intense curiosity about the "how" the "why" and the "passion" is not where he's at. That is my contribution to the story. From Jasper, we drove a rental car through the Columbian Ice Fields to Lake Louise, and then on to Banff. From Banff, it was a shortish drive to Calgary, Alberta, and the CALGARY STAMPEDE. That about sums up our recent 3-week excursion to Alaska. Planes, boats, and trains (and a rental car) combined to help us find what we were looking for in a genuine travel adventure. Then a road/train trip from Anchorage north to Denali and south to Seward and then Whitney, where we boarded our little DISCOVERY vessel to spend a week searching out wildlife, glacier, and wilderness in the silent bays of Prince William Sound.
